Day 23- April 30

Today Owen had school then OT
He refuses to tell mom what he does there but I did hear something about balloon volleyball lol.

Lunch was soggy fishsticks so Owen opted for ravioli. One of the boys moms brought cupcakes for their last day here and mom fantasized about our last day.

After lunch Owen went to get his fancy new stretchies! (AFOs) they have blue swirlies on them and a high heel for walking. That appointment took so long that he nearly missed his favorite part of the day....swimming! Mom gets to watch swimming tomorrow!

While Owen was out mom tried  her hardest to get her Dr. to respond to her calls about papers she had been waiting for for several weeks. Still nothing...mom is really stressed about it. But we carried on with our day positive and upbeat.

Mom made supper tonight and Owen was really happy as the hospital served ham for the millionth time lol. He loves moms cooking. After that they both got into making clay characters from the clay nana sent.

Another fun night. Owen says he is settling in now and it was the first night he has not wanted to bust out of here. Looking forward to bowling with the MD crowd tomorrow night!

Day 22 - Back to work!

Today was a pretty typical day. Owen got up and had school followed by Occupational Therapy. He made a craft and then went back to school.

In Physiotherapy he was able to stand 20 minutes straight on the tilt table. Then an extra 5 minutes following that for a total of 25 minutes. That is the first time since his surgery! He was even bouncing but he had to stop since he is still only bearing weight on his right leg. Mom has been trying to figure out what we need to do to make sure the house, and in particular the bathroom is set for when we go home so this doesn't happen again.

Then mom and Owen headed to the Tunnels to see if they could get to Tim Hortons without getting lost. We kind of did get lost and an AHS employee kindly guided us there...lol.. Good thing mom has a good memory because we didn't need help finding our way back. I should point out we could not go outside today because it was snowing and blowing in Edmonton all day!

When we returned to the unit we watched 3 episodes of Duck Dynasty as we do almost everyday. I think that show has been the greatest source of distraction on these long hospital days and nights.

Our roommate was out tonight and the unit was very quiet. Owen thinks it is creepy when it's quiet. He played Super Smash Bros on the Wii tonight.

Then Owen played with hid Traxxas and had a ball trying to run mom over. Good thing his battery only lasted a half hour!

We finished the night entertaining ourselves watching Dumbest Stuff on Wheels

Day 19 to Day 21- Busted Out!

Day 19 - We had a pretty typical day. Owen did all of his therapies including his most favorite....swimming. We prepared for dad and Brayden to come bust us outta here for the weekend. When they got here we went and checked into the Ramada on Kingsway. It was fully booked but it was good to see mom would have a real BED for the night.

Mom scored free Special Passes to Galaxyland at West Edmonton Mall so we went to the Sawmill for supper then to play some games. Dad and Brayden went on a few rides and some guy even vomited right in front of them after the roller coaster....ewwwww! Owen played several games and ended up getting a miniature model toy dirt bike. Everyone had a blast!

Mom and Dad got to enjoy the hotel lounge while Brayden and Owen watched movies. Everyone was very content. We also managed to wish Auntie Erica a happy Birthday that day even if it was just a text!

Day 20- Mom decided to give the family the experience of Cora's for breakfast. It was a hit and Owen decided he actually likes over hard eggs. He would not touch eggs before. Everyone had a fantastic breakfast then off to the Telus World of Science. We spent all afternoon there playing with all the different exhibits. We even took in the IMAX show Rocky Mountain Express ( Brayden thanked us for the social lesson lmao!)

After that we went to Earls thanks to my great sista Erica for a nice family supper. Sooooo good. Owen had steak 2 nights in a row. We had to run as fast as we could into the restaurant though because a freak windstorm was pelting us with sand!

After that we went and got snacks and drinks decided an evening relaxing in the hotel was in order. We ordered a movie (7 psychopaths) it was a good movie! And did nothing! It was great! We even managed to message Mom's parents a happy 39th anniversary and again even if it was just a text.

Unfortunately the hotel was having issues with their pipes and when some of the guests had showers it sounded like jackhammers were being used in our bathroom at 6 am. That didn't help in the rest department but we were all together so we didn't care.

Day 21- The end of the weekend :( .. However we made this day last as long as humanly possible. We had lunch at the Kingsway food court then mom got her hair done while the boys went to some bike shops. When we met up again we decided to travel to St. Albert because Owen wanted to shop for Traxxas stuff at Future Shop. Brayden and dad kept leaving funny face pics on all the phones and tablets on display!

We then decided to thwart Owens steak eating habit and went to Swiss Chalet where he loves the chicken and dipping sauce. Brayden entertained us all with his wit and kept making us laugh.

Dad took the scenic way back to the hospital and helped us unpack and then had to head off home. Long faces when dad and Brayden drove away..Owen spent the rest of the evening playing wii with his roommate. Awesome weekend!

Day 18- Grilled KD and Cheese Sandwiches

Owens day started with a writing test at school. Due to his DMD his wrist got a bit sore for cooking class but he did his best!

His OT was cooking class. They made grilled cheese sandwiches with anything they wanted on them. Owen picked cheddar, mozzarella, and Kraft Dinner in his. Yes the KD was in his sandwich. Believe it or not he LOVED it which is strange because he does not like sandwiches! He also had mashed potato and gravy. His favorite.

Mom did really exciting things like laundry and drawing.

In the afternoon Owen finished his writing test then had to stand in the tilt table. He played Blokus and manage to stand fot 23 minutes. He brought out his Super Smash Bros game and the gang all played together. Owen loves having a few good friends and they had a blast.

Mom took Owen out for Mcdonalds tonight and thanks to nana and papa we had the  "traditional" sundaes after. Hot fudge....yum!

Then we walked back in the awesome weather tonight. When we got back we played a nice long game of Phase 10. We had snacks, watched tv then to bed we go. Looking forward to an awesome weekend in a hotel with the fam.

Day 16- comfort at last!

Today is a day filled with business so you are going to get the itinerary for mom and Owen today:

7:00 am- mom got up and got ready for the day after her first night on the cot. It still needed a memory foam but was well worth the switch

8:00 am- Owen woke up and got ready for his day. He prefers to stay sitting in bed for a bit so mom got his school stuff together and he relaxed for half hour.

9:00 am- After Owen had a hearty breakfast of Captain Crunch he was off to school. And mom met nana and papa outside. She managed to get Eco Medical to fit her in to assess Owens charger since it wouldn't charge his chair and had CAT teeth marks in it.
Off to Smittys for mom and grandparents for breakfast and awesome conversation.

10:00- Owen had OT and papa took mom to fix the charger. Turns out the whole thing was shot so we got a new charger. Yay! And it was no cost.

11:00- Off to Home Depot,Michaels and Walmart to get foam, a mini fridge and several other items. Owen continued to do his routine while mom was out and even managed to con the nurses to warm up ravioli instead of hospital food for lunch.

1:00- Owen went back to school for an hour(yep only 2 hours of school per day.)

1:30- mom, nana and papa returned to the hospital with all the awesome stuff and nana and papa gave mom her present.. a beautiful shirt, manicure set and bath stuff! Nice! Costed papa 8$ for 2 hours of parking. CRAZY!

2:00- Owen went swimming for physio and got to full weight bear on his affected leg. He even got to walk a bit which really excited him. The social worker came to meet mom and offer services and managed to find us an awesome room for the weekend at the Ramada for only 70$ each night!

3:00- Off to get new orthotics made. That is the picture that looks like a cast. It is a mold of his foot they use to make the orthotics. He picked a blue swirly pattern. He also thoroughly annoyed all of us lol. Afterward owen got his present from nana and papa. Clay with all the tools! He loved it.

4:00- we all walked over to Moxies. Guess what Owen had lol. And it was half price wine night. Nice! Nana had a rice bowl and papa and mom had enchiladas.
Then we went for hot fudge sundaes again and Owen took a milkshake home.

When we returned back to the unit we relaxed and played several awesome games of Blokus. We had such a great day. A day in the life of Owen is very very busy.

Day 15- moms birthday and Nana and Papa Day!

Today was a big day for Owen . He started school again. Mom made Lori and Cathy wait to go to  Cora's because she made sure he got there! He had a full day of therapies and school and artwork.

He made soapstone charms and played Blokus.

Lori took mom for breakfast but first she accidently took her to a burnt down restaurant. They made it to Cora's and had a fabulous birthday breakfast with singing and a duck made of apples.

Nana and Papa brought mom her cot....Hooray! Nana also brought a care package from home that had the weirdest yet very useful things in it. Even dill and clothespins and earplugs and soap!

We walked to Moxies and everyone had an awesome steak dinner. Of course mom got some wine finally lol. And for birthday dessert papa treated us to hot fudge sundaes at the " hobo" mcdonalds.

Nana and papa were rebels and didnt pay for parking lol. Lucky for them no ticket.

After we walked nana and papa to the parkade we came in the basement doors and there was Dr. Kolski, one of Owens Neurologists. Owen helped her find the way to our unit. She is always so nice and helpful. She even checked for his test results while she was here.

Owen finally had the shower the nurses had been begging him to have and he smelled awesome!

Great day today!

Day 14- Surprise By Lori

Today was a big day! We didn't know it at first but it was packed with action.

It started off with an AWESOME sleep in. Owen got to sleep until 10 am uninterupted. Mom even got a shower in before he got up.

Then Dad and Brayden brought breakfast in to start the celebration of moms birthday (before her birthday). They can't be here for the real birthday. Dad took us shopping and we got lots of stuff. All mom wanted was a hotel next weekend so dad agreed. He tried to get her to pick something but she refused. Barb and Fred met us at lunch and gave mom some awesome gifts. Good to see Fred not wearing glasses and loving it!

Jane came by and brought us all malt cupcakes that she made from scratch. They even had cream cheese malt icing. So good! She visited with us for a while then headed out just before her parking pass expired!

Then Dad took all of us to Red Lobster for moms birthday supper. She was hungry so we went early at about 4 pm. Mom couldn't figure out why nana was bugging her about going so early. Owen, mom and dad had lobster and shrimp. Brayden had Crab legs. It was perfect. Just when mom thought it couldn't get better a surprise came to the table and shocked us all. Lori and Cathy were there and to moms surprise, nana knew they were coming. Mom looked stunned then super excited.

After supper the guys went home and Lori and Cathy came to see Owens pad. They played Super Smash Bros & Mario Cart then had at late night snack with us. They also brought party hats and blowers with em. Lori gave mom 2 bottles of wine - one was pinot grigio and the other was chocolate red wine.

Owen starts his big schedule this week. He has OT/PT & school. Hope to see lots of progress this week.

Owen closed off the night watching Duck Dynasty. How fitting since we get to see papa tomorrow!

What an awesome day!
